Rebecca Schmitt's story was made international news back in 2017. While experiencing the consequences of her mother's cancer and homelessness she reached the milestone of class Valedictorian at her Atlanta school, Maynard H. Jackson High School.

ATLANTA, GA, May 04, 2021 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Four years after Rebecca's notable achievement, she has completed another. Rebecca received her Bachelor's of Science diploma at Duke University's Pratt School of Engineering. The degree is a double major in mechanical engineering and mathematics. Rebecca Schmitt is now scheduled to begin instruction this fall at Duke to receive her master's of science in mechanical engineering.

The COVID-19 crisis has contributed to housing issues for a great number of students that have opted to go home and finish college remotely. The utilization of Zoom was instrumental in helping Rebecca meet course requirements. While there was not a traditional graduation ceremony for Dukes Class Of 2021, seniors were encouraged to attend the commencement ceremony on campus which featured John Legend as the keynote speaker. The ceremony was live streamed Sunday May 2nd 2021 at 9:00 am eastern time.

Rebecca is presently a student at Duke University where she is active in many clubs and organizations. Notably she was the president of Duke Smart Home and the programming director for Future is Now.
