Crusader's Way follows the life of Aileen, a new employee at the Abbey of St. Edmundsbury who encounters a Crusader returning from the Holy Land with a piece of the True Cross. When the relic is stolen, Aileen sets out to clear the name of her falsely accused friend. In Penitent's Sword, Aileen and her friend Robert investigate the murder of a lord's steward who carried a sword to the shrine of St. Edmund as an offering.
Aileen and Robert team up again in Bishop's Pride to track down a missing serf who disappears after finding a buried chest containing an embroidered cloth. The story imagines a possible answer to the centuries-long question of what happened to the rest of the Bayeaux tapestry, a real-life work of art that depicts key events at the time of the Norman Conquest of England.
Although the St. Edmundsbury Mysteries are intended for young adults, readers of any age will enjoy these meticulously researched historical tales. The series will be particularly enjoyable to fans of Peter Tremayne's Sister Fidelma mysteries and the Brother Cadfael series by Ellis Peters.
