A leading tax attorney is offering consultations to taxpayers with liens ahead of significant shakeups in the IRS.

-- The Cumberland Law Group has announced that it is extending legal services to residents in North Carolina, particularly in Charlotte and Raleigh, ahead of a possible reduction in IRS staffing this year. The firm advises those with tax delinquencies to seek its help before anticipated changes to the agency affect or limit their options.

The current administration has proposed sweeping cuts to the IRS, which will halve its 90,000-person workforce. While this may result in weaker enforcement, the Cumberland Law Group stated that the real impact of these cuts has yet to be seen and that there is a high chance they may negatively affect those with liens.
"With fewer staff, the IRS may have less ability to pursue and enforce tax liens, but it could also mean fewer personnel to resolve issues, such as your appeal to a tax lien," a spokesperson for the law firm said. "Another possibility is the agency adopting a different method of collection that could be more drastic."
"If you've been issued a lien by the government, swift action on your part is needed, especially with these recent developments," they added. "Speak with our tax attorneys."
A lien issued by the IRS is a legal claim by the federal government on a taxpayer's property when they fail to pay their federal tax debt. Before issuing a lien, the IRS will assess the taxpayer's total liability and demand payment. The agency will only file a Notice of Federal Tax Lien if the debtor fails to comply.
A number of recourses are available to those who have been issued a lien, such as the Collection Appeals Program. "These programs involve many steps, and the chances of an appeal being denied are always a possibility. To prevent this, it's better to have a tax attorney negotiate on the debtor's behalf," the spokesperson said.
