A father reflects on his daughter’s year of momentous growth at Wellington College International Shanghai

By: Get News

Those first few steps our children take on their lifelong journey are often the biggest and most important. Just ask Qin, a Wellington parent. After one year as a Nursery pupil at our Early Years Centre, his daughter, Merrily, has already hit her stride, even when no one is looking.

This fall, she has entered Reception at this Shanghai school more curious, confident and independent. She is proving to be a budding vocal and dance talent as well. Today, Qin reflects on the remarkable progress Merrily has made at the Early Years Centre at Wellington College International Shanghai so far, the great source of pride she has been for his family in her development and what he loves about being part of the Wellington Community.

1. How has Merrily grown and developed during her time at the Early Years Centre?

I think she has made rapid progress. She has become much more independent since enrolling at Wellington, which I think is one of the best international schools in Shanghai. She can even read by herself. Now she always says, “I want to do this by myself.” Before she joined the Early Years Centre, she always asked for help: “Can you do this for me? Can you do that for me?” But last year, we observed her behaviour every day. She is so happy and courageous. She is not afraid to try new things she is not familiar with. She is not afraid to join other people's conversations.

2. How has the Early Years Centre nurtured her talents?

Last year, the Early Years Centre at Wellington College International Shanghai celebrated Chinese New Year, and the children did a group performance. There was singing and dancing, and we could see on her face that she was really enjoying it. She did all these moves very smoothly and confidently. And I was thinking, "Hey! Yeah, you are kind of a big girl?” It was really an emotional moment for us.

Every child is a gift to the family, and I think everybody has a kind of talent. And now, will sometimes sing by herself. Not in front of us. Even if we encourage her to sing. She won’t do that. But she will sing solo when she doesn’t think we’re around. And when she hears a song or sees somebody dancing, she can follow it. I think this is her hidden potential.

3. What are the biggest changes you have noticed in your child since she started attending the Early Years Centre of an international kindergarten in Shanghai?

She is no longer afraid to take part in group activities. When she has an interest in doing things with other people, she just joins them. Even if there's a small conflict, I think she knows how to deal with this. She knows how to respond to this kind of thing. She is so enthusiastic about learning too. Every day, she comes home, excited to tell us all about what she has learned.

4. Has the Wellington Community provided opportunities for you to build friendships with other parents?

Wellington College International Shanghai

Yes! Having a strong network of friends is important, and we have this in the Early Years Centre. We talk about what is going on with our children, what they are learning, how they are growing. We celebrate their achievements together at Wellington College International Shanghai. We share reading recommendations. It has become a very important part of our life!
