Breakthrough sets a new precedent for battery-powered appliances, paving the way for safer home electrification, insurance coverage, and scalable adoption.
Impulse, the Bay Area startup building the next generation of battery-powered appliances for the modern electrified home, today announced it has achieved UL certification for its flagship product, marking the first and only time a battery-integrated appliance has met the rigorous safety standards set by Underwriters Laboratories (UL).
This certification is a historic first for the category and sets the stage for widespread adoption of battery-integrated appliances. By working closely with nationally recognized test labs (NRTLs) to establish safety protocols for this entirely new class of hardware, Impulse has not only cleared a critical regulatory hurdle—it has defined the path forward for others.
“When we set out to build a battery-integrated cooktop, we knew there was no playbook,” said Sam D’Amico, CEO and founder of Impulse. “This isn’t just a win for us, it’s a signal to the entire industry that battery-powered appliances are real, they’re safe, and they’re scalable. And we’re the first company to prove it.”
Certifying to UL standards ensures that a product meets strict safety requirements related to electrical performance, thermal limits, battery management systems, and fire risk. For hardware companies, home builders, and insurers alike, listing with a NRTL is often a non-negotiable requirement for deployment, liability coverage, and consumer trust.
Jason Fisher, a voting member of two National Electrical Code-making panels and multiple UL Technical Committees, explains: “Listing and testing to a consensus standard offers critical assurance—to consumers and first responders, including firefighters—that these devices are safe to install and operate.”
With its onboard battery, the Impulse Cooktop installs faster, uses less energy at peak times, and offers unique grid-resilient features—unlocking both performance and energy independence.
Building for What Comes Next
This certification doesn’t just represent a compliance milestone. It opens doors for collaboration with homebuilders, appliance makers, and electrification programs that are ready to scale the next generation of home technology.
“We worked with UL and other NRTLs from the beginning to define how battery-integrated products should be evaluated,” said D’Amico. “That work doesn’t just certify a stove—it establishes a blueprint. For any manufacturer looking to bring battery-powered performance to their own appliances or devices, the groundwork is done. We’re ready.”
About Impulse
Impulse is powering the future of the home through high-performance, battery-integrated appliances. With a team of engineers and designers from Apple, Tesla, and Nest, the company is reimagining how appliances store, use, and share energy. Impulse aims to revolutionize the way our homes and communities are powered, creating a new category of appliances in an industry that hasn’t changed in 50+ years.
The first Impulse product, the Impulse Cooktop, features an integrated battery that combines stored and grid energy for high performance and efficiency. The stove arrives ready to install into customers' homes, eliminating the need for wiring and panel upgrades, and its built-in battery ensures backup power at all times.
