USTMA Kicks off National Tire Safety Week: June 30th – July 4th

The U.S. Tire Manufacturers Association (USTMA), representing manufacturers that produce tires in the U.S., today launched National Tire Safety Week 2025, an annual public education campaign designed to raise awareness about the critical role of tire care in driver safety. Running from June 30 to July 4, this year’s theme, “Check Your Tires. Protect What Matters,” urges drivers to take simple, proactive steps, such as checking tire pressure, tread depth, alignment and rotation, to help protect the people and moments that matter most. USTMA also released findings from a recent national survey that suggest drivers understand the importance of tire care and safety, but key knowledge gaps still exist.

“Tires are the only part of a vehicle that touches the road, and their condition plays a critical role in keeping everyone safe, from drivers and passengers to pedestrians,” said Anne Forristall Luke, USTMA president and CEO. “National Tire Safety Week is a powerful reminder that proper tire care isn’t optional; it’s essential. Our member companies are committed to advancing tire technology with a strong focus on safety, innovation, and sustainability.”

Tire safety isn’t just about vehicle maintenance, it’s about protecting your loved ones, your time, your travel plans and your peace of mind, National Tire Safety Week serves as a vital reminder. Tires play a crucial role in everything from handling and braking to fuel efficiency and performance. However, many drivers overlook basic tire care. A quick tire check can prevent unexpected problems and ensure a safer, more reliable ride for everyone on the road.

The USTMA survey of 2,000 U.S. drivers ages 16 and older provided the following insights about tire safety awareness:

  • 46% of U.S. drivers surveyed correctly identified the driver’s side door or the vehicle manual as the proper location for the recommended tire pressure.
  • But a significant 45% of drivers do not know the correct location to check for the recommended tire pressure of their vehicle measured in PSI (pounds per square inch).
  • The survey also reveals a wide range of awareness of how frequently tire pressure should be checked. While 21.1% of respondents believe it should be checked weekly and 19.4% say monthly, more than 10% say it should be checked only before long trips or - never.
  • When it comes to looking at a tire’s tread, about 1 in 6 drivers remain unaware that tires have built-in tread wear indicators. These important “tire wear bars” make it easier for drivers to inspect a tire’s tread depth, which gives your car traction and control on the road.
  • Young drivers aged 16-24 are less aware than older drivers that tread wear indicators exist in every tire. The survey showed that 21% of drivers in this age group are unaware of these bars in the tread’s groove.

These results reinforce the importance of ongoing motorist education to ensure all drivers are equipped with basic tire care and safety information.

U.S. tire manufacturers recommend that drivers check their tire pressure at least once per month, monitor tread depth and ensure regular tire rotation and alignment. These simple, routine checks are critical to ensuring safety, especially during peak travel periods. To make it easier, USTMA and its members encourage drivers to remember the simple acronym “P.A.R.T.”—Pressure, Alignment, Rotation, and Tread.

“Tire conditions directly affect safety, handling and performance for every vehicle and motorist on the road,” said Dick Gust, CEO at the Tire Industry Association. “When drivers understand the value of routine maintenance, including pressure checks, alignment, rotation and tread inspections, they help protect lives. National Tire Safety Week is an important reminder to act on these simple steps.”

USTMA’s members represent the leading tire manufacturers in the U.S., producing tires that meet the highest standards for safety, performance, and environmental responsibility. Tires are built using cutting-edge technologies to ensure they meet the unique needs of today’s vehicles. USTMA members are also at the forefront of efforts to promote sustainability and educate the public on proper tire care.
