Aria Releases New Double Single Featuring New York Jazz Singer Velvet Belle
Aria’s newest double single, recorded at Downtown studios in Johannesburg, contains two songs in the contemporary jazz style, but with Aria’s classic World Music influences. For this, Aria worked with Peter Gabriel at his studio in Bath, England.

“Blind Eyes” and “Find that Man” were performed by the New York jazz singer Joanna Teters, aka Velvet Belle, with her unique vocal timbre that recalls some great voices of the past such as those of Billie Holiday and Dinah Washington.

Teters is an accomplished singer and band leader in her own right, having worked with the likes of Eric Robertson, Jacob Collier, Goapele, Thundercat, Moonchild & Gabriel Garzon-Montano. She is often a featured artist at international jazz festivals.

Aria played the two songs with Miriam Makeba’s backing band and vocalists, important musicians who, following the death of Mama Africa, have collaborated with major artists in both Africa and the USA. This group exemplifies the best sounds of jazz, African music, contaminated with soul, and funk in the style of Chic, complete with maestro Bernard Edwards’s slap and pop technique on the bass.

Mariano's piano dialogues with that of Paul Hanmer's, under the stylistic influence of Keith Jarrett. Both songs contain classical influences, including orchestral instruments such as the clarinet, cornet, bass clarinet and bassoon, medieval horns, the piva and the zampogna, which can be heard in the finale of “Blind Eyes”, along with with Ayo Solanke’s (noted gospel and jazz soloist) beautiful tenor saxophone. Blind Eyes’s finale features electronic, new wave, and art of noise influences as well, a melange seldom seen in contemporary music. Solanke himself has worked with artists such as Hugh Masakela, Ringo Madlingozi, Benjamin Dube, Judith Sephuma, Zahara, Afrotraction, Berita, mafikizolo, and Danny K.

In “Find that Man”, one can enjoy Portuguese Fado harmonies. All in all, Aria represents a new experimental jazz, close to progressive rock, and it remains to be discovered.

Both music videos were done with AI and are in 4k. The video for Blind Eyes in particular was done with an innovative technique, combining both AI and the 3D graphic expertise of Italian-Israeli Vadim Zenin. Dream-like sequences integrate seamlessly with images of the protagonist, creating a backdrop and storyline that perfectly reflect the subject matter of the song. The execution of this was months in the making.
