Dear Elected Officials,
On behalf of the 193 San Jose Water employees represented by the Utility Workers Union of America Local 259, and the 40 San Jose Water employees represented by the Operating Engineers Local 3, we want to communicate our support of the merger of equals with Connecticut Water approved by our companys Board of Directors. This merger will provide job security to represented and non-represented employees. We have been assured that the combined company will honor our negotiated bargaining agreements.
As you know, our represented employees are dedicated to serving San Jose Water customers. Our team is responsible for the operation and maintenance of San Jose Water, and works hard to ensure safe, high quality and reliable water service is delivered 24 hours a day, every day of the year. We are the men and women who design new and replacement infrastructure, operate water treatment plants, pumps and wells, maintain water mains and fire hydrants, provide customer service by phone and in person, maintain maps and records, help new homes and businesses connect to the system, and collect water quality samples to ensure public health protection and a high quality of life for customers. We are proud of the work we do in service to our customers, but we do not do this work alone. Many of the employees of San Jose Water are non-represented employees. The planned merger provides job security to the entire workforce of the company not just represented employees. This is critical to ensure that our more than 150-year-old company can continue to provide excellent customer service to our customers and to maintain a reliable water system.
Additionally, under the planned merger, our represented employees will continue to maintain a direct line of communication with the management of San Jose Water. We believe these direct communication channels have promoted, and will continue to promote, productive negotiations and will help mitigate the risk of potential contractual disputes.
We understand fully that another water company has made an unsolicited indication of interest to acquire our parent company. That water company has promised to honor our negotiated contracts but has not provided assurances regarding the continued employment of all non-represented employees and could disrupt the well-established working relationship between management and our bargaining units that has yielded productive negotiations over our companys long history.
For these reasons, we urge you to support the Board-approved merger.
Sincerely,
/s/ Jeramiah Roma |
