Grace Gott Wins the Pintas & Mullins Dangers of Vaping Scholarship

Gott receives the $2,500 award for her essay on using compassion and healthy coping mechanisms to reach young generations.

CHICAGO, IL, November 11, 2021 /24-7PressRelease/ -- The Dangers of Vaping Scholarship has been awarded to Grace Gott, an International Studies major at Indiana University. Gott wrote her winning essay on the ways that she believes current anti-vaping campaigns are going wrong. Namely, her assertion is that her generation is already aware of the health consequences of vaping. What is truly needed is a more compassion-forward approach toward relieving people who vape from the anxieties that cause them to turn to the habit.

Gott was affected by the attempted suicide of her best friend's sister, whose self-image was greatly harmed when her lungs collapsed due to vaping. The sister required surgery, and the fallout from that tracheostomy crippled her self-worth. This, Gott believes, is the true way to stop people from vaping: get at the actual anxieties and depression that lies beneath vaping usage.

"I believe that people are aware of the dangers of vaping, but that they don't care until it happens to them," writes Gott. The solution, according to Gott, is to help people realize that their health matters because they matter. "Everyone in this world has value even when they struggle to believe that," she writes.

This mission is personal for Gott. As an International Studies major, she is focusing on human rights and international law, with a minor in Southeast Asian Studies. Her goal is to become a foreign service officer, though she plans to graduate early and officers must be at least 21. In the meantime, she may decide to pursue a master's degree or work for an NGO.

Whatever the specifics of her path in the coming years, one thing is certain. The work Grace Gott does will revolve around compassion and serving others.
