A Vicarious Adventure to Papua New Guinea May be Just What You Need if the Delta Variant has your Wanderlust Aching

Explorations of a lost world await in "Wild Happy," the newest adventure memoir from Cresting Wave Publishing.

SPOKANE, WA, August 31, 2021 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Just when you thought we were past the worst of COVID and the restrictions on our travel and adventures, the Delta variant has swooped in to shelve those dreams. New cases of COVID have skyrocketed to the levels we saw back in January.

Some seized the chance this summer to travel and settle their restlessness. Others, hoping the situation would only continue to improve, waited patiently for COVID to subside.

"Nothing replaces going out and exploring the world firsthand. But in uncertain times, when it's not safe, my hope is that sharing these types of adventures can provide a little globetrotting comfort," says author Ryan Casseau.

This may be part of why Casseau's new memoir, "Wild Happy," is already an Amazon best-seller.

Part "Indiana Jones," part "Chicken Soup for the Soul," "Wild Happy" shares the adventures of Casseau years before he would go on to become a successful scientist at the National Institutes of Health and in the pharmaceutical industry. At age twenty-four, he set off alone to the most remote jungle he could find, searching for removed communities and the plants they used as medicines. His exploration brought him to the indigenous villages of Papua New Guinea. They are a culture known for their history of brutality and cannibalism.

But while he was worried about getting work done and returning to civilization, something unexpected got in the way: Everything.

"In Papua New Guinea, I went with a singular focus (to collect medicinal plants), and it nearly killed me. When I finally embraced the people, their foreign world, and the more profound lessons the experience held for me, it gave me everything I needed and more.

"In the villages," Casseau continues, "they had much healthier relationships between time, possessions, and social interactions. They knew bits about how the rest of the world was living, but they didn't care."

Ironically, "staying safe" is keeping many of us from traveling. Casseau, through his time in Papua New Guinea, experienced just the opposite.

"I had malaria six times," Casseau remarks. "My personal safety wasn't really on the menu. It's part of the magic of being naïve and twenty-four. However, if not for the wonderful people of the island where I was staying, I don't think I'd be here today."

In equal parts humorous, unnerving, uplifting, and reflective, "Wild Happy" fiercely captures a bewildered boy and the lost world that took him in, shared its hidden wisdom, and changed his life forever.
