A lot of us have spent the majority of this year at home. People have turned to all sorts of creative means for entertainment. But sometimes, the best pastimes are the classics. Nothing beats a good movie night. From childhood sleepovers to late-night horror movie binges, movie nights have been with us our whole lives.

When it comes to hosting a movie night at home, there are certain things you’ve got to have. Whether you are running it for your kids or your friends, some aspects don’t change.

BLACKOUT BLINDS

Blackout blinds are perfect for getting that cinema darkness. Curtains on their own just don’t block out enough light. For a daytime movie watch, blackout blinds make sure you can see the screen well, and you can recreate the experience of not really knowing where your seat is.

For those who may struggle to get their hands on blackout blinds, throw a towel up in the window, or a blanket. It may not have quite the same effect, but it sure will be funny watching someone from your household trying to stick a towel in the window.

TV POSITIONING

The position of the TV is crucial. Make sure everyone has a good view of the TV, and that your neck doesn’t hurt to see the screen. If it’s in your own home, you don’t want to have the same experience as someone who’s sitting front row at the cinema – ouch!

Getting your hands on mirrored TV units can help, as they can easily be pulled into an ideal position. Plus, you can keep an eye on everyone’s facial expressions as they watch the film in the mirrored bits!

SNACKS

A necessity for any good movie night is some tasty snacks. Popcorn is a classic, but people’s flavour preferences may differ. Then there’s sweets and chocolates, maybe a drink. For the old school movie watchers, you might want to provide some nachos.

If you want to go full cinema style, why not make little popcorn bags, so people can really feel like they’ve gone to see a film at the cinema. But you’ll have the advantage, as you’ll be getting these snacks much cheaper than the prices they charge at the cinema!

DECORATION

Many people miss going to the cinema now it’s more difficult, so why not make little tickets to give to your movie night goers?

Print off some movie posters from your favourite films, and stick them up in the hallway, as though those coming to see the film have to walk through the cinema first. By creating a full experience, you’ll feel like you’re having an experience, rather than just sitting down to watch a film.

Make sure your cinema is comfy though – with lots of cushions and blankets, those watching won’t miss the cinema anymore. You can’t lie down at the cinema anyway; it’s overrated!

Now your cinema is ready…

As the New Year looms, it can be useful to spend a bit of extra time focusing on fun, rather than the bleaker aspects of the previous year. Making a little home cinema seems like a perfect way to do this.
