Exploring Roles of General Counsel in Diversity and Public Affairs: Two Virtual Sessions on Jan 13, 2021

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

New York City, NY, January 11, 2021 — The Vanguard Group for Leadership has added additional virtual events for chief legal officers, Ken Banta, founder and principal of the Vanguard Network, announced today.

“The role of the GC is expanding in these unprecedented times, requiring competencies beyond being a great lawyer,” said Banta, “We explored this at The Vanguard Mini-Forum for GCs in September, and there was agreement that deeper exploration is needed.”

Sitting General Counsels are invited to participate in two highly interactive Zoom sessions, each lasting one hour, from noon to 2 pm Eastern time on January 13.

The first session will explore the role of the GC in transforming diversity, equity, and inclusion from rhetoric into reality. Small groups will look at what works, and what does not, based on participant experiences. And we will discuss whether the GC has a special mission to lead the DEI initiative enterprise-wide.

Session two tackles the GC’s role in leading the response to the new U.S. administration. This discussion will focus on how companies should respond to the regulatory, legal, and societal impacts of a new administration, and the role of the GC in shaping and implementing that response.

Experiences like these are produced by the Vanguard Group’s membership organization, the Vanguard Network, which supports C-suite leaders and other top executives in honing their leadership capabilities.

The 2021 Forum for General Counsels sessions are free to members of the Vanguard Network. There is a nominal charge for nonmember GCs.

“General Counsels play a special role in the C-Suite, often serving as a bridge between the CEO and the Board, and with oversight into many different areas of governance,” said Ken Banta, founder and principal of the Vanguard Group for Leadership. “Our network of sitting GCs across sectors has found value in connecting with their peers on issues such as these.”

In addition to its work with General Counsels, the Vanguard Network is active with healthcare and life sciences senior executives, and young science leaders — the latter in collaboration with The Aspen Institute.

Vanguard’s roster of more than 100 faculty and session leaders includes David Pyott (Royal Dutch Philips), Ashley McEvoy (J&J), and Tom Sabatino.

Ken Banta is a top management advisor who works with CEOs and senior executives on leadership, organizational transformation, and corporate positioning. Ken has helped to lead eleven successful global transformations and turnarounds and has advised on many more. Ken writes regularly for HBR and is a Contributing Author of “HBR’s 10 Must Reads for CEOs.”
