Eyebrows have been called “the beauty obsession of the decade.

But not everyone has been blessed with the fluffy, arched brows that are so en vogue. Instead, we have to come up with ways to bulk our brows in a way that’s impactful, but subtle. And we don’t want to spend all day doing them, either.

That’s just one place where cosmetic tattoos have come in to save the day. Of course, you can have such work done on other parts of the face. But you want — or have had — microblading or cosmetic tattoo done to improve your brows.

And, now, you need to know how to care for your skin afterward.

Why is Cosmetic Tattoo Aftercare Important?

With any tattoo procedure, you must take aftercare seriously.

A needle or blade opens the skin. If you don’t care for the affected area afterward, you could experience scarring or have an infection and not getting the desired result.

And either one of those options could adversely affect the look and feel of your cosmetic tattoo. So, be sure to take its care seriously to ensure it looks its best — and you retain your optimal health, as well.

What Do I Do Immediately After My Cosmetic Tattoo?

As with any tattoo, the skin around your eyebrows will react to your microblading and cosmetic eyebrow tattoo procedure.

Right away, you will probably experience tingling in the area. The skin will likely become tender, as well. Swelling is also a common side-effect of cosmetic tattoos.

The redness, swelling, and tenderness can last for up to two days after your cosmetic tattoo, but these sensations usually subside within several hours. You can dull these side-effects with an over-the-counter pain reliever, though.

You’ll need to give your cosmetic tattoo approximately two weeks to heal properly. So, you’ll have to avoid direct sunlight, which can cause your tattoo to fade.

You should also avoid any physical activity that will cause you to sweat, as this can damage your tattoo, too.

Do I Clean My Cosmetic Tattoo?

Yes! It’s vital that you keep your cosmetic tattoo clean. The above tips will help, but you’ll be in charge of cleansing the area regularly, too.
For the first two hours after your cosmetic tattoo, you’ll have to dab your brows with tissue or gauze every 20 minutes. This step prevents scabbing in the area.

Six hours after your session, you’ll switch to MicroTonic, a cleansing solution. Swipe that on, then follow up with a thin layer of MicroBalm, which will soothe the area. All of this comes in your aftercare kit from us, and you’ll repeat this process two to three times a day for 72 hours post-procedure.

After those three days are up, you can switch to mild soap and water, which you’ll quickly put on and rinse off. Follow up with the MicroBalm, as you did before.

If you see your skin starting to flake — a normal reaction post-tattoo — you should keep applying the MicroBalm. Put it on after your quick cleansing sessions for up to 14 days after the procedure.

You should avoid getting your brows soaking wet while you’re in the shower, too. Do this by swiping a layer of Vaseline above your brows and apply a wrap to the brows. Vaseline acts as a glue to keep the wrap in place and gently protect your skin.

Is It Normal For Skin to Flake and Scab?

Flaking is a much more normal side-effect than scabbing. If you follow the above steps, you shouldn’t be scabbing, although you may see some very thin scabs appear. You shouldn’t see any thick or crusty ones appear.

Do take care not to scratch or pick at your scabs, especially the bigger, thicker ones. You don’t want to deal with scarring or damage your newly done brows.

On that note, there are a few other rules to follow until the scabbing and flaking have ended. You shouldn’t:

  • Perform any heavy exercise
  • Go into a sauna
  • Use makeup, creams, or any other products on your brows

Even if these symptoms have dissipated, skip out on these activities for four weeks post-tattoo:

  • Tanning or going to the tanning bed
  • Using abrasive skincare products, such as exfoliants, acids or retinols

You should be applying sunscreen to your brows, though.

Will I Need Cosmetic Tattoo Touch-Ups?

Your cosmetic tattoo will probably start to look as envisioned around three weeks after the procedure. However, you won’t be done with tattooing after a single session.

Instead, you will have to come back for a touch-up between six and eight weeks after the initial application, which is conservatively done. The process will be the same as your first microblading session. This step makes your brow tattoo last longer, and it allows us to fix any flaws from the first go-round.

Clearly, having a touch-up means you’re having another cosmetic tattoo. And that means you’ll need to care for the area just as you did the first time you came in to see us. So, repeat the above steps for the best results when you get your cosmetic tattoo.

Ready For a Cosmetic Tattoo?

Of course, all of the aftercare required post-cosmetic tattoo can seem daunting. But it is really just a gentle cleansing and moisturizing process to keep your skin nourished. And, in the end, you’ll have fuller and more even brows — and you won’t have to apply any makeup to get them that way.

So, if you’re ready for a cosmetic tattoo, contact us today. We can answer your questions about the procedure or set up your first appointment, moving you one step closer to your dream brows.
