Hearing aids are sensitive devices manufacturers protect as best they can. However, just like other wearables they can give trouble if not cared for properly. If we know what to do we can often fix the problem, without requiring a costly hearing aid repair call.

This post will help you know where to start if your hearing aids are not working properly. If our tips don’t apply to your broken hearing aids, then we’ll suggest what to do next.

Common Reasons Why Hearing Aids Stop Working Properly

There are four main causes for hearing aids not working as they should. This may be down to hearing aid damage, or something just needing adjusting. We’ll go into them in more detail in a moment, but first here’s your check list of what you may be experiencing:

  • Your hearing aids are not working at all
  • You can hear sound but this is too soft
  • The quality of the input does not sound right
  • You hear feedback or whistling sounds

Of course, there’s always a possibility your hearing aids are broken. But hold that thought, because there’s good chance you may be able to fix the problem yourself when you know how.

What to Do If Your Hearing Aid Has ‘Gone to Sleep’

You may not need to have your hearing aid repaired, even if you sound like you are deaf again in that ear.

  • Silly question perhaps, but did you turn your hearing aid on before you fitted it? If you have single use, non-rechargable batteries did you install them the right way around, and close the cover properly.
  • Perhaps you turned your hearing aid on, but the volume switch is set all the way down. You may have turned it down yourself for peace and quiet. Turn up the volume. Did that fix it?
  • If you still sound deaf you may have switched to the wrong program. If you still have problems after fixing that, it may be time for a recharge, or a battery change. But before you do that try one more thing.
  • When last did you clean your earpiece and the connecting tube? You’ll be amazed how effectively ear wax can obstruct sound. If that fails to produce results too, then you may have damaged your hearing aid inside.

Practical Solutions if the Sound Is Too Soft

Follow the above tips before proceeding further. If everything checks out okay, then the problem may lie with the tube connecting the device to the earpiece in your ear canal.

Tubes can become blocked with ear wax if we don’t service our hearing device regularly. Clear the wax away carefully with the tools that came from your supplier.

Tubes can also become dry and brittle from age. Sound can escape from them if they crack, distort or fit loosely at either end. Replace the damaged tube from the kit the manufacturer supplied. Shorten it to match the old one.

Things to Try If the Input Sounds Muffled or Strange

Power supply is the most likely cause, meaning you need to recharge, or change the batteries for new ones. However, check the program you are on first. If the problem persists, you may be due a hearing aid repair.

How to Deal With Feedback and ‘Whistle Sounds’

Feedback and whistle sounds are ten-to-one due to air leaking past the earbud into your ear canal. Take the earbud out and insert it again, twisting it gently to embed it properly. If this fails, then there are two remaining possibilities:

  • You may have wax build up in your ear canal that needs removing by a doctor
  • You lost weight since you purchased the device and need a larger earbud

However, if none of these suggestions produce results, what else can you do to get your hearing back on track? Don’t go away, we’ll be right back.

Your Hearing Aids May Not Be Working Because You Changed

Hearing aids are programmable, sophisticated devices. However, they work within their own systems and can’t look beyond them. Your aids may not be broken. It’s quite possible you have outgrown them after several years as your hearing continued to deteriorate.

Hearing aids also gradually deteriorate if you don’t look after them properly including dehumidifying them regularly. There’s also a slight possibility of a problem within your physical hearing system. We are not doctors. Always consult a health care professional if in any doubt.

You’ve Exhausted All the Above Possibilities Except Hearing Aid Repair

Hearing aids are digital wonders packed tight into their shell cases. Manufacturers source prefabricated components, and mass-assemble them using robotic tools.

There’s not much a human being can do except replace a cracked case. If you are wondering how much it could cost to repair your hearing aids you may be in for a shock.

That’s because our survey informed us you could pay as much as $160 for someone to take a look, and do the things we suggested. But that could be nothing compared to the cost of the spares.

To summarize your situation when facing a potentially expensive hearing aid repair:

  • You have a pair of hearing aids you purchased a while ago
  • You might be able to make a guarantee claim, but that would take weeks
  • Your insurance will not cover you because it only includes total loss
  • If you send your hearing aids in for repair you could spend $100’s
  • You could have poor hearing for weeks and learn they are beyond repair
  • You could order a brand new pair from us for $197.99 including delivery

We would ship your new hearing aids within 24 hours. And allow you a 21 day trial period with the right to return the goods within 30 days in original condition.

Why hassle with repairers, insurance assessors and manufacturer claims when you could have a brand new pair of hearing aids for considerably less?
