Healthcare in some countries is increasingly difficult to access or afford for many people. It’s no surprise that many of them, therefore, are turning to complementary treatment modalities in droves. In fact, the use of complementary medicine to augment conventional medicine is on the rise around the globe.
What types of holistic treatments are out there? Today we’re taking a closer look at five of them.
1. Homeopathy
Have you ever used an arnica cream to help heal a bruise? If so, you’re familiar with homeopathy.
One of the most controversial complementary practices, homeopathy is based on the principle that “like cures like.” Low-dose, high-dilution substances, including minerals and plants, are recommended based on a patient’s symptoms.
Homeopathic advocates swear by it. They say that it is effective for everything from the common cold to major depressive disorder.
Homeopathy is popular in many European countries. It is just beginning to find a foothold in the United States as a valuable tool in the complementary medical toolbox.
2. Ayurveda
Ayurvedic medicine is one of the oldest healing approaches in the world. Ayurvedic medicine holds that every person has a particular pattern of energy — physical, emotional, and mental — that influences their wellness. When that energy is out of balance, illness can occur.
When a patient visits an Ayurveda Clinic, they may receive massage therapy, get tips for lifestyle management, or be prescribed a course of ayurvedic herbs to help restore balance to the body. Yoga and other treatments may be recommended, as well.
3. Acupuncture
Acupuncture is another ancient form of holistic treatment. Acupuncture also seeks to address imbalances in the body’s energies. Each of us has channels of energy, or chi, running throughout the body. When those channels become blocked, the energy cannot flow. This causes problems.
By using very thin, flexible needles inserted gently into the skin at specific points on the body, the chi is allowed to flow freely once again, restoring balance and wellness.
Acupuncture is often touted as a solution to addiction, insomnia, lethargy, chronic pain, and other troubling conditions. It’s also very relaxing, say its proponents.
4. Naturopathy
Naturopathy is something of an overarching, comprehensive treatment comprising several different modalities. Naturopaths are likely to advise a combination of approaches, including nutritional medicine, herbal medicine, homeopathy, lifestyle changes such as physical exercise, massage therapy, acupressure, and more.
When a patient is under the care of a naturopath, they receive comprehensive treatment. While almost all complementary modalities are holistic in nature, taking into account all aspects of a patient’s life, naturopathy is especially inclusive.
5. Reiki
This Japanese therapy also focuses on the flow of energy within and around the body. It uses non-invasive, non-manipulative touch to alter that energy, thereby promoting relaxation and improved energy. These states, in turn, inform the body’s immune response, psychological condition, and overall wellness.
Giving Conventional Medicine a Boost
Complementary approaches, in tandem with conventional medicine, can be effective. It helps to keep an open mind, but the power of these therapies is often great enough to convert skeptics.
