When summer finally gets here having that little space to call your own and spend some time in the sun is a great feeling. Having the space to hold family BBQs and gatherings are just what you want to make the most of the summer heat. But what if your garden has been neglected now for some time? Well, here are a few simple steps you can take to breathe life back into your old shrubs and lawn, just in time for the heatwave.

Get to weeding

If you haven’t been outside in a while, weeds may have slowly been taking over and choking your old plants. Weeding can be a laborious task, but if it’s worth doing, it’s worth doing properly. Not clearing out the weeds correctly can cause them to come back when you least expect it. Tackle the area with a fine-toothed comb and use all precautions necessary, especially in bad cases. You don’t want to spend all your time and effort for it to be ruined a few months later.

Increase your grassy area

If you want to spend some serious time in the garden this summer then consider increasing the grace space you have. Increasing the lawn size may not be possible in all cases but if it is then putting more play space down for children and pets may be worth your time. Why not consider putting down some Artificial grass instead of real grass? While not everyone may like the ever-growing craze of artificial grass, it cannot be denied that it is a serious contender to the traditional garden lawn. With relatively easy maintenance and built from long-lasting materials, artificial grass should be a consideration when renovating your entire garden.

Prune and remove

Pruning older plants and outright removing dead or unsavable ones, gives them a chance to come back fresh and blooming for summer. Pruning should be done with care and attention so as not to damage any healthy plants too much. You don’t want to get overzealous with your shears and find out that your old roses are now no more. It may be worth consulting a professional if you aren’t certain or at least taking the time to educate yourself online first before diving straight in. Don’t forget to re-pot any plants that need it. It is essential to keeping them fresh as long as possible.

Involve the family

Getting the family, especially the kids, involved with the whole ordeal is a great way to spend time outside bonding as well as providing an educational experience for the younger generation. Knowing how to garden properly is a great skill for them to have in the future. Plus it gives the whole family a shared activity and goal to bond over. Great for spending those late summer nights in the sun.

Conclusion

While there is a lot more to gardening than the above, it is still an excellent place to start. Finding your green fingers opens the path to a treasure trove of hidden garden gems and to building your own slice of paradise. Right in your own back yard.
