New shopping app Temu has seen 10.8 million installations since its launch in September, making it the most downloaded mobile app across all categories between November 1st and December 14th, according to data provided by analytics firm Sensor Tower. Why are US consumers flocking to Temu? The answer lies in their innovative customer experience and “remarkable” selection of products and prices, according to the Wall Street Journal. Katy Benetti, a 68-year-old office manager from Dartmouth, Massachusetts, recently discovered the benefits of shopping on Temu.

While browsing the site for Thanksgiving, she filled her cart with 14 items totaling $90 and was pleasantly surprised when her order arrived within 7-15 business days. Impressed by her experience, she returned to Temu for her Christmas shopping, purchasing 34 items for a total of $223. “I think that’s the place I will be shopping from now on because it’s got everything,” Benetti told the Wall Street Journal. She is just one of the millions of US consumers who have flocked to Boston-based Temu. Temu’s affordability can be credited to their parent company Temu is backed by Nasdaq-listed commerce group PDD Holdings, which has a market capitalization of over $100 billion.

The group has built strong expertise and resources in commerce and trade over the last decade and has a network of more than 11 million suppliers. PDD Holdings offers Temu strong financial and operational backing in its expansion. As of Sept. 30, 2022, the listed parent company reported a trailing 12-month profit of $5.2 billion on $17 billion in revenue, with $17.2 billion in cash, according to SEC filings. Additionally, the company has a wealth of knowledge in logistics and supply chain management, serving more than 900 million users worldwide and handling more than 200 million parcels a day.

Its this wealth of knowledge, expertise, and infrastructure that enable Temu to offer such affordable prices to their customers. Temu has demonstrated its commitment to consumers, which fueled its early success. The app has received high ratings from users, with a 4.6-star rating on the Google Play app store and a 4.5-star rating on the Apple App Store. Temu is committed to empowering their users and merchants Annette Parks is among the millions of satisfied customers who have shopped on Temu and highly recommended it to their friends and family. Parks shared her positive experience of the app’s attractive merchandise and competitive prices in a review on the app store. “I have used other shopping apps in the past but have had issues with overpriced items, long shipping times, lost shipments, and subpar quality. But on Temu, I have purchased a number of items that are all of excellent quality and prices are much lower than what I have seen before. Additionally, my orders have arrived very quickly, in about a week, and I love the lightning deals and free shipping,” Parks wrote on Dec. 8. Brianna Lukey, a resident of Fort Worth, Texas, is among the many individuals who have benefited from using Temu. Lukey said she received $200 worth of items from the app for free and first learned about it from a friend a month ago. She actively promoted Temu on social media platforms such as Facebook, TikTok, and Snapchat, encouraging her friends to join the app. As a result, Lukey earned credits that she used to purchase items for her own business as well as gifts for her daughter. “I know there’s a lot of things that go around that may not be legit. But this was,” she told Time. According to Temu, the company aims to provide consumers with “the most value-for-money products with the best customer service and transparency” through its platform. Additionally, it aims to empower sellers by providing them with direct access to customer feedback, enabling them to be more responsive to consumer needs. “Temu is positioning itself at the forefront of the next era of e-commerce, which we believe will move beyond disintermediating or optimizing the manufacturing supply chain, into matching individualized needs and wants with global resources and delivering them efficiently,” according to Temu. “This shift will lead to the creation of legions of new businesses, and Temu is prepared to support and enable them.”
