Yu Opera "The Tale of Pipa" Stages in Hefei from Dec.29-30, 2025
The adaptation of the classic southern drama from a new perspective has broken fresh ground by staging a southern story in the northern operatic form. The performance strikes a delicate balance – classic yet refreshing, somber yet warm-hearted.
"By delving into the emotional depth of the leading characters and integrating the distinctive vocal style of Yu opera into 'The Tale of Pipa,' we have created something that feels both familiar and entirely new to the audience," said Zhang Yanping, winner of the prestigious Plum Blossom Award for Chinese theater, who is also the director of the Zhengzhou Theater Art Protection, Inheritance, and Development Center.
The Yu Opera production was among a series of activities named as “Operas in Anhui, Shining Hefei”, officially commenced in Hefei since this September 28, is a grand celebration to mark the 235th anniversary of the historic "Hui Troupes Entering Beijing", which was widely regarded as the origin event of Peking Opera.
