CommonWell invited to help lead new national patient access and exchange standards
CommonWell Health Alliance announced today it will participate in and help define the newly announced CMS Interoperability Framework, including meeting requirements to become a CMS-Aligned Network. The vision for the framework is well aligned to CommonWell’s expertise and leadership in patient access, high-quality record matching for provider and patient usability, and strong connectivity and transparency standards. This continuity makes CommonWell a leading choice for organizations committed to frictionless interoperability nationwide under CMS’ leadership.
“Our mission is to advance a nationwide network that delivers a secure and seamless flow of health information to improve patient care,” said Paul L. Wilder, Executive Director of CommonWell Health Alliance. “The CMS Interoperability Framework underscores the value of CommonWell’s priorities since we were founded in 2013, including capabilities that help our members to accelerate patient and provider access to complete and accurate data in a safe and flexible environment. We’re proud to be invited to usher in this new era of interoperability.”
The CommonWell platform features purpose-built services that help organizations across 20 types of care settings to easily and effectively participate in the national network. It features several capabilities aligned with the new Interoperability Framework:
- CommonWell Individual Access Services (IAS), the technological driver behind patient access, is currently available to members and supports Identity Assurance Level 2 (IAL2). IAS is supported by default with CommonWell, and the organization has spearheaded efforts and advocated for the need to make patient right of access a reality for years. CommonWell was the first QHIN with an IAS Provider live on the framework and successfully querying for patient data.
- CommonWell Master Person Index makes accurate and complete clinical records easier to find for providers, patients, and other qualified stakeholders. CommonWell brings together automation, simplification, and reliability to deliver easier access and total control, de-duplicating and merging patient records to create a single, unique record of a person. Powered through CommonWell’s Record Locator Service, members benefit from an efficient search function that delivers comprehensive results with no geofencing limitations, which remains a significant barrier to access in the industry.
- Industry-leading connectivity and security across the platform. CommonWell currently supports Cross-Community Access (XCA) or FHIR queries to Carequality and TEFCA. It provides 100% coverage among TEFCA-enabled endpoints, with strong aggregate performance across the network. CommonWell’s infrastructure has been HITRUST-certified since 2019. CommonWell is one of only nine Qualified Health Information Networks® (QHIN®) in the U.S. today.
The CommonWell network enables the federated exchange of patient information across the nation, representing more than 261 million unique individuals. To date, it has facilitated the exchange of more than 11 billion health care records.
