What Drives Gen Z Investors? TeenVestor.com Study Reveals Motivations and Learning Tactics

TeenVestor.com, the investment-education platform for teens and parents, is announcing the results of the only known study focused on self-motivated teen investors. The young investors in the study valued financial education enough to pay for and complete a nine-hour stock investing course.

The two-phase study began with 160 students (mostly ages 13-18) who answered a pre-course questionnaire about goals, prior investing experience, and school resources. After finishing the course, 61 of those students completed a follow-up questionnaire evaluating the curriculum and their own investing intentions.

Key Findings of the Study:

  • 75 percent had never bought a stock before enrollment, yet 92 percent said the course made them “totally” or “mostly” likely to start investing, underscoring teen appetite for fundamentals over hype.
  • Lessons on balance sheets and income statements topped the “most useful” list (43 percent each), showing teens want investing fundamentals over hype about quick gains or meme trades.
  • ESG investing ranked lowest in perceived usefulness; only one in four found it valuable, challenging popular beliefs about Gen Z investors and sustainability.
  • 67 percent attend schools with no investing or business classes, underscoring the education gap that TeenVestor.com aims to close.

“This is the first study to show what motivates committed teen investors and which topics actually stick,” said Andrea Walker-Modu, co-author of TeenVestor®: The Practical Investment Guide for Teens and Their Parents. “The findings give educators and fintech firms a roadmap for reaching a generation that wants substance, not slogans.”

Founder Emmanuel Modu added, “Many polls ask teens how they feel about money, but our respondents paid for investing education and finished the course. Their answers carry far more weight than casual surveys of financial literacy. Financial media, brokers and app developers finally have data from the audience that matters: investors under 18 who are ready to act.”
