RU-N continues to excel in the national rankings. For the second consecutive year, the university ranked #5 nationwide for social mobility and #1 in New Jersey and the Northeast, according to U.S. News & World Report. Its social mobility index measures how well universities enroll and graduate economically disadvantaged students who receive Pell Grants. With 56% of RU-N students Pell-eligible, the university ranks #12 nationally in graduation rates for Pell recipients.
“Rutgers University–Newark’s success stems from its deep commitment to access and excellence,” said Chancellor Tonya Smith-Jackson. “Our culture of belonging, our research that addresses real-world challenges, and our intentional support for students from every background together form the foundation of our growth and impact.”
Nearly 92% of RU-N students are New Jersey residents, with 40% identifying as first-generation college students. Students come from across the state, but most are from Essex, Hudson, Bergen, Union, Middlesex, and Passaic Counties, as well as 36 states and 116 countries.
Approximately 15% of undergraduates at RU-N are non-traditional students aged 25 and older. About 85% of students commute to campus, supported by discounted NJ Transit passes, parking options, and shuttle services designed to ease travel and strengthen engagement in campus life.
With 45 undergraduate programs, 32 master’s programs, and 13 doctoral degrees, RU-N offers students opportunities to learn and lead in one of the country’s most diverse academic communities. The campus is home to over 136,000 living alumni, including leaders in law, business, government, and the arts, many of whom remain active mentors to current students.
Scarlet Raider pride was on full display at an October 12 Open House, which drew over 1,100 prospective students and families to campus tours, information sessions, and student life tabling. In addition to its enrollment increase, RU-N’s academic and research distinction also continues to grow. These investments in research and creative infrastructure attract top faculty and create new opportunities for student participation in discovery and innovation.
RU-N's rise in national rankings reflects its ascent as an institution:
- #36 among public universities nationwide (up from #39)
- #75 among all universities nationwide (up from #80)
- #45 for Best Colleges for Veterans (up from #48)
“Belonging and academic rigor are not mutually exclusive at Rutgers–Newark — they’re mutually reinforcing,” said Jeff Robinson, Provost and Executive Vice Chancellor. “Our students succeed because they feel connected: to their peers, to faculty, staff and to the opportunities that stem from one of the most dynamic research universities in the nation.”
