New book "The Landmark Achilles” by James George Brianas is released, examining the life and legacy of a legendary warrior through myth, history, and intriguing stories of the Bronze Age Mediterranean

“The Landmark Achilles: In Search of His Palace, Family, Homer, the War, and the Bronze Age Mediterranean” by James George Brianas has been released worldwide. This fascinating, 436-page book melds myth and legend with meticulously researched history to present a thorough portrait of the life, accomplishments, environment, and lasting legend of Achilles, the famed hero of Bronze Age Greece – and in the process, reveals the truth about Homer and the Trojan War.

Best known for his role in the Trojan War and a central character in Homer’s The Iliad, Achilles has remained a household name for centuries, yet the full breadth of his story – as well as the historical accuracy of the surrounding claims – is riddled with conflict, doubt, and details lost to time. In this highly detailed, wide-reaching book, author James George Brianas pulls together numerous sources, including two decades of his own onsite research, to craft a vivid depiction of the man, the world he lived in, and how his story became embedded in the annals of history. Included are details of the palaces and fortresses of the Greek kings who fought at Troy, recent excavations of Troy, and the fiery collapse of the Late Bronze Age.

Born to parents from the province of Thessaly and fascinated by ancient Greeks from an early age, the author’s inspired pursuit of knowledge led to a career in academia and a passion for “boots on the ground” study. Earning the nickname “Annapolis’ Indiana Jones” through diligent exploration of ancient sites throughout the Eastern Mediterranean, Dr. Brianas eventually turned his attention toward finding and identifying the palace of Achilles, and in doing so, unraveled Bronze Age mysteries stretching back millennia.

With a deft hand for storytelling and a palpable enthusiasm for the material, Dr. Brianas presents the Late Bronze Age (3000 to 1200 BC) and the Trojan War as foundations for the fertile period of culture, democracy, and thought in Classical and Hellenistic Greece. With Achilles at the forefront, the book provides readers with deep insights, companion evidence, and lessons from ancient Greece that remain applicable today.

The Landmark Achilles (ISBN: 9781965340776 / 9781963844542) can be purchased through retailers worldwide, including Barnes & Noble and Amazon. The hardcover retails for $47.99 and the paperback retails for $39.99. Review copies and interviews are available upon request.

From the back cover:

The Bronze Age Mediterranean, 3200 to 1200 BC, was a period of high movement, intrigue, and warfare. In this book, the author, through extensive research with “Boots on the Ground,” provides a new, cohesive, and comprehensive view of that age, the evolution of the Greeks into the Mediterranean, the kings and commanders with their fortresses and palaces, and capped in the final years with Homer’s war, “The Greatest War Story Ever Told.” He describes not only how the Greek hero Achilles and events of that war leave a lasting legacy but also weaves in five generations of the family of Achilles, the truth about Homer and his war, and solves the mystery of the palace site of Achilles and his father Peleus. Excavations of Troy from 1871 to the present are revealed as are the discovered clay tablets of the Hittites identifying numerous wars at Troy and along the Aegean Sea in western Anatolia. The ultimate collapse of the Bronze Age and its kingdoms brings this author’s epic saga to its final conclusion, the devastation of that end period harboring ominous signs for or own world today.

A general reader, Jason Preyer, Palm Harbor, FL, working with the UPS, said of the book, “I couldn’t put the book down. I was absorbed in fact versus myth and I had to keep on reading.”

A Publishing Director, Danielle Allan, Boston, MA, with Mindstir Media, stated, “Your manuscript is fascinating. The book captures powerful storytelling while leading the reader through your adventures and combining them with legendary stories."

Another reader, Alexander Lardis, Annapolis, MD, a Senior Scientist (retired) with the U.S. Government, said, “The research is phenomenal, well-documented, and with a wealth of information. It was fascinating. I left feeling I had read a great story.”

About the author:

Born of immigrant parents from the province of Thessaly in Greece, homeland of Homer’s Achilles, it was inevitable that one day Dr. James George Brianas, a.k.a “Annapolis’ Indiana Jones,” would one day search for the illusive palace site of that Trojan War hero. He was educated in Architecture and Psychology at the University of Florida, attended George Washington University, and received a doctorate in Leadership and Management from Loughborough University in England. While based in the Middle East with a multinational corporation, his travels took him from the deserts of Saudi Arabia, the pyramids of Egypt, Jordan’s Petra, Cyprus, Turkey, Greece, and Western Europe. A fortuitous visit to Troy in 1999 piqued his interest in the Trojan War, and after 20 years of archaeological research in Greece and Turkey the results are written in this book. Beginning his career as a Research Analyst in Washington, DC, he became and currently serves as President of the “AchillesFoundation.org.” He can be reached at jamesgbrianas@gmail.com. (A companion Photo Album is planned for in support of this book.)
