Carlos Anthony again brought his expertise and ingenuity as a photographer to bear at the recently concluded Ankeney's 2nd annual event celebrating Juneteenth, capturing an image of an ethnic dance group with a performance that “sums up what Juneteenth is about.” The hugely successful event that attracted a very diverse audience captured some of Iowa's black-owned businesses, featuring the first black-owned dance/ballet studio in Iowa, SEEDS.
Juneteenth is a federal holiday in the United States, described as one of the oldest known celebrations to commemorate the end of slavery in the county. The annual celebration on June 19 marks the day in 1865 when Union Army General Gordon Granger proclaimed freedom for enslaved people in Texas. President Joe Biden signed the Juneteenth National Independence Day Act into law in 2021, recognizing the day as a federal holiday, a move that expectedly received massive accolades from Blacks across the globe.
The second edition of the event was sponsored by several major corporations such as John Deere, featuring the first black-owned dance/ballet studio in Iowa. The dance group from the studio reiterated the commitment of Ankeney, Iowa to supporting the national holiday and bringing more awareness to the cause and what it represents nationwide.
SEEDS is a ballet dance company founded by Dontreale Anderson and Sarah Jae as a non-profit business in the Des Moines, Iowa community with the goal of providing cultural empowerment, creative expression, and entrepreneurship to youths in the community.
It came as no surprise that Carlos Anthony was part of the celebration and the opening ceremony of the dance studio, considering his prowess in capturing images that captivate the minds of the audience and deliver the message. Carlos Anthony is known for using his photography skills to drive conversations across different subjects.
